Item Description
Guided Reading: The Wump World Suggestions for teachers to guide students during a "read aloud" of Bill Peet's popular environmental book, with pages for students to fill in their own before, during, and after reading questions; this unit includes art prompts.
Book: Something from Nothing (primary) Reviews Phoebe Gilman's retelling of this Jewish folktale, with questions tying the story moral to the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Book: Mighty Tree (primary) Open-ended comprehension questions and prompts to go with Dick Gackenbach's tale of three trees: one used for material, one a Christmas tree, and one left in the forest. A great Earth Day tie-in.
Book: Just a Dream (elem/upper elem) Rather than focusing on text, this lesson addresses Chris Van Allsburg's use of light and shadow to tell a dystopian fairy tale... but it was surely just a dream. This is a great art appreciation lesson.
Book: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (primary/elem) Imagine yourself in the Truffula forest... Wonder what the Once-ler thinks of all his money... Finish verses with your own Seussian nonsense names... Enjoy the Lorax word find. You'll find these activities and more in this accompaniment to Dr. Seuss's cautionary classic, "The Lorax"!
